Dr. Meredith Nash
I’m a highly qualified, experienced academic sociologist and executive coach
I am the Deputy Director of the Institute for the Study of Social Change and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia. I earned my PhD in Gender Studies in 2008 and a Master of Gender Studies in 2005, both from the University of Melbourne. I earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Major: Psychology, Minor: Women’s Studies) from the University of Illinois in 2001. In 2018, I earned a Level 1 Executive Coaching Certificate from the Institute for Executive Coaching and Leadership.
I am a gender equity expert who uses evidence-based approaches in my research and coaching
I am a feminist sociologist who explores gendered inequalities in everyday life. My research focuses on four key areas where inequality persists including: Parenting and reproduction; organizational culture/leadership; Sport/physical activity; and Media. My work examines how gendered inequalities in these sites undermine women’s existing rights, pose difficulties in how women manage paid work and caring responsibilities, limit access to leisure time/spaces, and challenge their realistic portrayals in the media.
I have a national and international reputation as an engaging research leader who serves the broader community in a variety of ways
My excellence in research has been recognised via appointments to key national committees (e.g. Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association) and through prestigious international visiting scholar appointments (e.g. Eleanor Glanville Centre, University of Lincoln, UK), and speaking invitations (e.g. National Science Week). I am the Equity and Inclusion Portfolio Leader for the Australian Sociological Association and serve on the Board of Women’s Health Tasmania.
I am a leader in ensuring that my research is visible and has impact beyond the academy
My research has been featured 100+ times in national and international media outlets including Sydney Morning Herald (Australia), BBC News (UK), The Independent (UK), Daily Mail (UK and Australia), Globe and Mail (Canada), Salon (USA). I regularly translate the aims and outcomes of my research and provide expert commentary on television, radio, and podcasts, and documentary films.
